3 Swedish Torches Build and Compare. These Swedish Torches are easy to make and fun to use. Great for camping or to add some atmosphere to garden parties. I build 3 different kinds and test them out.
Type 1 is the Axe method. This is the simplest and all you need is an axe and some wire. Chop the log into 4 chunks, bind the bottom about 4 inches up with the wire and then drop some pebbles into the splits from the top to keep them separated. Done! This one burns relatively quickly.
Type 2 is the Chainsaw method. Use a chainsaw to cut 2-4 cuts in a “star” (asterisk) pattern from the end of the log down to within 4 inches of the other end. This one burns quickly as well, more so with the more cuts you make.
Type 3 is the drill method. Use a long, 1.5 inch auger to drill down from the end to within 4 inches of the other end, then drill a couple holes from the side of the log into the bottom of the hole you drilled. This one burns slowly and is best suited to use as a “lantern.”

If you used the chainsaw or drill method, you can gather the shavings and soak them in kerosene, bbq fluid or similar fluid to use as a way to easily light the torches.
